Amid a vast and turbulent sea, the older red elephants struggle through the waves to keep the baby safely between them. Their bodies surround and protect the little elephant as they battle the powerful water together. The baby, who appears throughout the A Moonlit Night series, represents the next generation—the reason to endure the perilous journey and continue toward the promise of a safer future.
The A Moonlit Night series consists of six 48" × 60" fantasy oil paintings that follow a symbolic journey of red African elephants from a moonlit ocean to a new dawn. Painted before the poem was written, these works inspired my poem, A Moonlit Night. Each painting purchased from the series is accompanied by a signed copy of the poem.
