Tribute to Tuskless
Tuskless was the matriarch of the TA elephant family in Amboseli, Kenya, and was studied for many years by renowned elephant researcher Cynthia Moss. In January 1997, after a Maasai cow was killed by an elephant outside Amboseli National Park, Tuskless was shot and killed in retaliation. There was uncertainty as to whether Tuskless was the elephant responsible.
In my painting, Tuskless stands facing the viewer with her young calf behind her. In the distance, her herd charges toward her—not as a literal reconstruction of the event, but as my expression of the tragedy of losing their matriarch. To the right, a Maasai man stands over the dead cow whose death set the events in motion.
I painted Tribute to Tuskless to honor an elephant whose life had been observed and documented for decades, and to portray the devastating consequences that conflict between humans and wildlife can have for both.
