In Orphaned Calf, a young African elephant has lost his mother and comes upon her remains. Recognizing what he has found, the calf stands quietly before her bones, deeply saddened by the loss. I wanted this painting to convey the profound emotional bonds between elephants and the grief they experience when a member of their family dies.
